New Delhi The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament will examine all aspects of the steps taken by the Center in dealing with the Covid-19 crisis. Committee chairman Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said on Tuesday that the Reserve Bank Governor could be called to assess the economic impact of the nationwide lockdown and the unemployment it has caused. A 22-member committee headed by Congress leader Adhir Ranjan in the Lok Sabha can also summon the Director General of Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and other top government officials.
He said the committee should comprehensively examine the Centre's actions and approach to deal with the Covid-19 crisis. Both the health and economic aspects of this epidemic will be studied. Adhir Ranjan said that we will definitely evaluate the government's work in dealing with unemployment arising due to lockdown. The committee may also summon top government officials and the Governor of the Reserve Bank, if required.
The Public Accounts Committee may, in addition to examining the reports of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), select one or more subjects for in-depth examination. It is perhaps the most important parliamentary committee, which has the power to summon all top government officials. The parliamentary standing committees have not been meeting for nearly two months in view of the lockdown imposed to stop the spread of Covid-19.
